REN Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream Review

March 30, 2009
REN Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream ($55)

REN’s Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream is a soothing, smoothing, super-emollient day cream packed with essential fatty acids that strengthen your precious skin while replenishing its moisture levels. Formulated with powerful anti-inflammatories, it soothes, calms, and protects reactive skin like mine upon application. It also contains REN’s global protection complex to guard skin from oxidation and free radical damage.

Omega 3 and 7 help repair and strenghten skin while reducing irritation and inflammation. Bisabolol and Calendula soothe and calm sensitive skin, while REN’s Global Protection Complex with its synergistic blend of powerful anti-oxidants and free radical scavengers helps purify the skin and protect it against chronic inflammation and premature ageing.

REN products just make my skin sing with happiness-rarely do I love pretty much each and every product that I try from a single line, but REN is truly wonderful, and the Hydra-Calm Global Day Cream is no exception. It’s great for sensitive, environmentally reactive skin (i.e. those of you who live in the city and have to deal with massive amounts of pollution) or delicate and fair complexions prone to sensitivity or redness (me!).

I love having a cream that comes in pump form so that I don’t have to deal with the messiness of sticing my fingers in a jar (am I the only one who has issues with getting products under her nails?). REN’s Hydra-Calm strikes that happy medium between a hydrating moisturizer and a just-thick-enough cream, and also makes an ideal mixing medium for REN’s serumes which are oil-based (and amazing). The cream is great for winter when my skin needs that extra bit of moisture for both day and night, smells great, and doesn’t break me out, clog my pores, or cause irritation. Plus I think that this in conjunction with REN’s Rose Synergy Serum has helped to significantly calm my redness.

I’m going to switch to something lighter during the summer, but next winter I’ll definitely be repurchasing!

  • My current favorite winter product is REN’s Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum–see my review HERE.
  • My other favorite oil serum is REN’s Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum–review HERE.
  • My first two REN products were their Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask and their Multi-Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask, both of which I happen to adore. Both amazing for keeping you pores clean and clear!

ABS’ Favorite Winter Serum: REN Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum Review

March 9, 2009
REN Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum ($80)

Been looking for that perfect serum to soothe your over-stressed, under-nourished winter complexion? REN’s Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum is it! I know I raved on and on about Peter Thomas Roth’s viz-1000 75% Hyaluronic Acid Complex Intensive Hydrating Serum, and while I love its lightness and quick-drying finish for the summer, during the cold harsh months of winter I definitely prefer something a bit more substantial.

What I LOVE: Just about everything. There are few times when I’ve been able to say that a product has brought about a significant, marked improvement in the state of my skin, but this is definitely one of those instances. Prior to switching pretty much all my skincare over to REN I was suffering from some pretty severe breakouts, my skin was feeling parched (but of course super-oily in the t-zone just to annoy me), and it just wasn’t looking so great–lots of ruddiness in the cheeks, no youthful glow, etc. While I’ve been loving all my new REN products, I’d have to say that I think the Rose Serum has been key to the changes I’ve been seeing in my complexion. I was worried that since this is a pretty heavy duty oil serum I’d experience breakouts and blogged pores, but I’ve seriously stopped breaking out at all (a miraculous feat in and of itself) and my pores are happy as can be.

I’ve been receiving so many compliments on my skin since I switched over to REN, making me one happy blogger. My skin is more radiant and has a dewy look to it, and this product has really helped to alleviate some of the redness in my cheeks. People have been asking me if I’ve been getting treatments from a dermatologist and how I get my skin to look so glowy!

Love the packaging! Sleek glass bottle (that I’ve knocked over many many times) + handy little plastic cap to prevent accidental pumping = Happy Jen

More Info: REN’s Rose Synergy Serum is formulated to lock in moisture, prevent skin dehydration, restore and maintain your skin’s glowing softness, elasticity and comfort, and protect against oxidative damage and premature aging–whew that’s a mouthful! This luxurious serum employs REN’s Biomimetic Skin Complex, a unique delivery system rich in lipids that strengthens your skin’s moisture barrier, boosting hydrating while calming irritation and inflammation.

Check out some of these fabulous ingredients!

  • The purest steam distilled Rosa Damascena Oil to soothe and calm inflamed skin (and also to provide aromatherapy benefits–this stuff smells heavenly!)
  • Octacosenoic Acid from African Ximenia Oil to seal in moisture and increase hydration
  • Vitamin A from Rosehip Seed Oil to stimulate cell turnover
  • Arctic Cranberry Seed Oil fights oxidation and free radicals
  • In addition, the serum has a bio active complex of ceramides, phospholipids and omega 6 & 7 essential fatty acids boosts skin repair and softness.

Skin Post-Application ~ nice and dewy

How I Use It: REN’s Rose Synergy Serum is thicker and richer than their Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum (see my review HERE), but while it’s ultra-hydrating and soothing, it still absorbs quickly, never leaving your skin looking or feeling greasy. During the daytime I like to mix this into my moisturizer (one part moisturizer to one part serum), and in the evening I tend to apply this under my moisturizer/night cream. And on those days when my skin seems to be in need of a little extra TLC, I’ll take an extra 1/4 squirt or so of the serum and apply it over my moisturizer as well, just to the apples of my cheeks.

While I wouldn’t recommend this serum for those of you who are super oily, if your skin suffers from dryness or irritation, this may be a dream come true for you–it most definitely has been for me! I know it’s pretty pricey at $80, but a little really goes a long way with this product (I never need more than one pump) and even though I’ve been using this for a decent amount of time now, I’ve hardly made a dent in it.

REN is available at Space NK, Sephora, Blue Mercury, Barneys, Fred Segal, and @ They currently have a great promotion going on that I’ll be posting about in a few minutes, so pop by the site and check out two of my fave REN products, their Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel and their Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask.

REN Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum Review

March 2, 2009
REN Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum ($60)

What It Is: Ideally used at night, this serum will boost the skin with essential bio active nutrients that stimulate its natural process of renewal and regeneration helping to restore suppleness and elasticity. In addition it stimulates the skin’s natural protection mechanism helping fight moisture loss and free radical attack. Vegetable Plankton Extract which is rich in Omega 3 promotes cell membrane development while Rosehip Seed Oil and Wheat Germ Oil intensively nourish and protect.

Feed your face…literally. REN’s Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum is high in lipid content, which is vital for cell hydration, longevity, and skin nourishment. I’ve been turning more and more towards oil serums as of late (although I still adore my Peter Thomas Roth serum), and REN’s Omega Serum is one of my favorites (although you’ll have to wait a day or two to find out what my absolute favorite is). It’s a pure blend of natural oils including rosehip seed, wheat germ, vanilla, chamomile, Vitamin E and Vitamin A that work together to soothe your sin, boost suppleness and elasticity, and even help to reduce the appearance of scars.

Half a quirt of REN’s Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum-see how light it is?

The Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum is light, quick to absorb, and doesn’t leave any unpleasant greasy-feeling residue on your skin. I absolutely love mixing a squirt of this serum into my moisturizer–it helps any cream to apply much more smoothly and just feels so incredibly soothing on.

Since I switched my entire skincare regimen over to REN, my skin has never looked better and I’ve been receiving so many compliments on my skin, which hasn’t happened in a long long time. I’m not sure exactly which REN product this is due to, but I don’t think I want to discontinue any of them to find out! If your complexion is mildly oily to combination or normal, I’d recommend giving this a try, particularly if you’re experiencing the early signs of aging and suffer from some slight dry patches.

All Absorbed

The serum does smell a little bit like fish oil to me, but it’s nothing all too unpleasant (think the fish oil capsules that you take) and pretty much disappears when you mix it into your moisturizer. Other than that one tiny little factor, I seriously can’t think of a thing I dislike about this product. I don’t know why I’ve waited so long to to test out REN Skincare–they haven’t disappointed me yet! I also swear by their Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask and their Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask, both of which were featured in my Best of 2008 Year End Round-Up.

My New Ren Goodies!

February 2, 2009

Expect reviews on these in a few weeks! I’m definitely on a REN kick as of late; the Glycolactic Peel and the Multimineral Detoxifying Mask were the best use I’ve ever made of a Sephora gift card, and I can’t wait to try the rest of their line!

New from REN: Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum

January 30, 2009
REN Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum ($80)
What it is formulated to do:
Ren Rose Synergy O12 Restoring Facial Serum offers jet-lagged, dehydrated, and dry skin a welcome dose of refreshment. Fight premature aging and achieve an instant, glowing softness with this advanced bio-active complex that locks in moisture, offers protection against oxidative damage, and replenishes skin with an infusion of African Ximenia oil.

What it is formulated WITHOUT: Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes, Petro-Chemicals

What else you need to know: This skin solution is free of T.E.A, D.E.A, glycols, and silicones

New from REN is this fabulous-sounding facial serum that I’ll hopefully be reviewing for you soon! Lately my skin has been loving oil serums such as this one–probably due to a combination of the cold and miserable winter that we’ve been having and the fact that my skin isn’t nearly as oily as it used to be a few years back. I’m thinking this will make an amazing overnight treatment for those days when my skin just needs a little something extra. Will update once I’ve had a chance to try it!

REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask Review

January 26, 2009
REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask ($55)

The Description: REN’s Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask is a gentle but potent peel mask formulated to dramatically remove dead cells, smooth lines, and to help prevent the appearance of spots and blackheads. The peel contains natural AHA from fruits, and does not irritate the skin like its synthetic counterparts. It’s paraben, sulfate, synthetic fragrance, synthetic dye, petro-chemical, and phthalate free.

As I mentioned in my previous review, REN’s Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask used in conjunction with REN’s Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask has really been a much needed harbinger of change for my skin! My skin had always been pretty decent up until the past year or two–relatively clear with the occasional monthly breakout, but nothing major. But for the past year or two my skin has been going haywire thanks to all the stress I’m under! My skin-frustrations were at their peak when I first read about these two products, and since I was pretty desperate I decided to give them a try.

I had a few monster pimples forming the two consecutive nights that I first tried REN’s Multi Mineral and Glycolactic, and the masks brought them to a head and dried them up within a matter of days. The Glycolactic Peel is fabulous for keeping those pores clear, eating away at your dead skin cells to promote a healthier complexion, and just making your face radiant.

I do notice that my face feels a tiny bit sticky after using this and so I tend to reserve it for night-time usage, but my skin is always glowing and healthy-looking the next morning, plus I’ve definitely noticed that my skintone is much improved and my pores are clearer since I’ve started using Glycolactic. During the ten minutes that I have this on my face I register some slight tingling sensations, but nothing that even comes close to the burning or irritation, making this suitable for all but the most sensitive of complexions.

This is definitely another one of those products that I never want to be without! I’d always been hesitant to try lines such as REN because I’d always equated “natural” with ineffectual or not-as-good, but I can’t believe how wrong I’ve been! REN is seriously one of the best skincare lines that I’ve tried thus far and I can’t wait to try more products from their range!

REN Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask Review

January 26, 2009
REN Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask ($34)

The Claim: REN’s Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask is a deep cleansing and purifying mask that draws out impurities and decongests the skin leaving it soft and smooth. Pore size is reduced and skin imperfections are less visible. It’s paraben, sulfate, synthetic fragrance, synthetic dye, petro-chemical, and phthalate free.

Does it deliver? Well here’s the lowdown–you’re essentially paying $34 for a glorified clay mask. Is it fabulous? Well I happen to think so. Are you going to die without it? Probably not.

REN’s Multi Mineral Mask contains French kaolin clay to draw out impurities, spirulina to stimulate cell renewal, and red tea which is an essential fatty acid. I love that it has a nice light consistency meaning it’s easy to spread unlike many other clay masks I’ve tried which have the consistency of hardened mud, and also that it doesn’t cause stinging/burning/irritation. I’ve tried the much raved about Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, and while it’s absolutely amazing for zapping a zit, it also makes me feel like I’m receiving a third degree burn to my face, so it’s a no-go for me most days.

Basically you spread a decent layer of the REN mask onto your face, let it dry for ten minutes or so, then rinse. You’re left with smooth, non-irritated skin that’s soft as a baby’s bottom–plus when you wake up the next morning you’ll notice your skin has a nice glow to it!

As for the pore-tightening effect, I’ve found that when used in conjunction with the Glycolactic Skin Renewl Peel my pores are clear (a miracle in and of itself) and nearly blackhead free and therefore my pores are a little tighter, although nothing drastic.

One final thing–I LOVE the packaging! The little plastic cap that goes over the nozzle ensures that you don’t get that little hardened blob of product at the opening, and everything stays fresh and happy until the next time you reach for this.

The Verdict: While I do happen to think it’s rather pricey at $34, I happen to love this and have reserved a permanent place for it in my skincare drawer! It keeps my skin clear (I’ve virtually stopped breaking out since I started using this and the Glycolactic plus a DDF toner), smooth, soft, and radiant–well worth my $34!

RATING: 4.5/5

ABS’ Five: REN Skincare Edition

December 3, 2008

I usually don’t dedicate my five to a particular brand, but while browsing Sephora’s skincare section this morning looking for something to spend my $15 off coupon code on (did you get one of these?) I came across REN Clean Bio Active Skincare, which is completely free from synthetic ingredients. A few clicks of the mouse over on MUA and I am now officially obsessed! I’m tempted by everything, particularly the masks–help me choose!

REN Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask ($55)
What it is:
A peel mask made with 100% natural fruit acids. This gentle but potent peel mask is formulated to dramatically remove dead cells, smooth lines, and help prevent the appearance of spots and blackheads. This peel contains natural AHA from fruits, and does not irritate the skin like its synthetic counterparts.

This is my top contender for purchase at the moment. Some reviewers mentioned that this, coupled with the Detoxifying Mask (see below) resulted in a drastic improvement in skintone/blackheads/whiteheads which I’m always up for, plus most of the other peels I’ve been looking at (Natura Bisse’s Glyco-Peeling for one) are just a little too rich for my blood.

Multi Mineral Detoxifying Facial Mask ($34)
What it is:
A purifying clay mask. This deep cleansing, purifying, peeling clay mask draws out impurities and decongests the skin leaving it soft and smooth. Pore size is reduced and skin imperfections are less visible.

Most of the clay masks that I’ve tried in my day have left me with the sensation of having my skin peeled off my face–excruciating stinging and burning and residual redness. But the results were almost always fabulous; clear pores, radiance and a more even tone and texture. I’m hoping this mask will give me similar results minus the feeling of being flayed alive.

REN F10 Enzymatic Smooth Radiance Facial Mask ($37)
What it is:
A gel-based fruit enzyme mask. This powerful, yet gentle blend of ten fruit extracts enzymatically exfoliates and detoxifies skin as it boosts cell turnover and skin renewal, leaving complexion smooth and radiant.

Omega 3 Overnight Lipid Renewal Serum ($60)
What it is:
A hydrating, nighttime facial serum. Replenishes the lipid barrier that retains moisture and stimulates the cell renewal process.

So from what I’ve read online this serum comes in oil form, and with all my skincare oil curiosity as of late I’m intrigued. I’m debating whether to go with this or the Argan Oil–at this point I’m leaning towards the Argan Oil.

Frankincense And Boswellia Serrata Revitalising Night Cream ($55)
What it is: A deeply nourishing night cream. Firms and brightens tired skin and helps relax expression lines.

Apparently one of the ingredients in this cream, Boswellic Acid, services to relax the facial muscles, thereby helping to prevent wrinkles. But since I’m relatively wrinkle-free at the moment, I’m more interested in the brightening and healing properties this night cream seems to have.

For those of you in the UK (or willing to pay international shipping costs), REN is currently having a 20% off promotion on their site (use code: PARTRIDGE) through midnight.
