UNII Palette Review: Simplify Your Makeup Life

February 7, 2010

Many of you have been requesting of review of the palettes that I used to pack my makeup goodies for my Cali trip, and now that the weekend is finally upon us I’ve managed to set aside some time for this post! In a word these palettes are awesome – they’re cleverly packaged, come in a variety of fun, vibrant shades, are ridiculously easy to use, and best of all, are super travel-friendly (and make fantastic gifts).

Check out the full review and find out where these palettes are from after the jump!

So where are these fun little palettes from? The clever mind of UNII Cosmetics creator Minna Ha who created the UNII palettes to enable you to combine magnetized products from all different brands into one convenient palette.

The palettes comes in this pragmatic yet cute envelope packaging that opens to reveal instructions on how to depot using a blowdryer (I have yet to try this method but definitely will in the near future) and much much more.

The palettes themselves are just all-around fantastic, albeit a tad pricey at $29 a pop (although worth it in my mind). They come with their own magnetic strips that you cut to size, and unlike the magnets that I purchase at crafts stores, these are actually strong meaning I can bang my palette around without having to worry about things popping out of place. The large, clear interior mirror is indispensable (I whip mine out on the airplane or at work to touch up my makeup and it’ so nice not having to peer into some tiny little thing) and the rubberized seal around the edges prevents any leakage, but my favorite aspect of these palettes is the dimensions.

The UNII palettes (pictured in Pomegranate above) measure 3.7″D x 6″L x 0.7″ thick – and what really ensures that I use these often is they’re just thick enough that you can even pop a few eyeshadow brushes in there. I happen to hate having to carry a separate pouch for my brushes and always end up just using sponge applicators or my fingers for touch-ups, so the fact that I can now just pop a few of my MAC SE brushes or any of my shorter-handled shadow brushes right into the palette is just amazing.

The UNII Palettes are available in Lemonglass (yellow), Eggplant (purple), Snow (white), Pomegrante (pinky red) and Twilight (blue) and they’re all just gorgeous. Each shade contains this nice multi-dimensinal shimmer that gives them that extra special something, and there’s really a shade for everyone (how perfect is Snow to store your bridal makeup?).

Check out close-ups of Lemonglass and Snow below to get a better idea of the shades and the shimmer in them – how pretty, right?

I have last-minute makeup-requiring events come up all the time so I’m never without at lesat one of my UNII palettes. Now all I need is to buy one of Bobbi Brown’s pan foundations so that I can pop one in one of my palettes and really have a face in a palette. I’d definitely recommend these as gifts for your make-up loving friends as they’re practical, cute, wonderfully sturdy and oh so convenient.

Availbility: Online only at the UNII Palette site for $29.00.

Packing For A Cali Wedding

January 18, 2010

My gorgeous younger cousin is getting married this weekend (which has brought on all sorts of old maid comments – le sigh), and lucky for me the wedding is in California, giving me an excuse to venture all the way across the country to spend at least a few days basking in sun before returning to the bitter cold of NY.

Getting my cosmetics together for a trip is always a bit of a production, but so far I’ve at least got my shadows and blushes picked out and placed into smaller palettes for easy travel.

Check out more photos after the jump!

I’m taking along a bunch of MAC pressed pigments in a variety of colors since I’m pretty indecisive and I probably won’t be 100% on the look I want to wear until the morning of the wedding. Plus I just love the way they look sitting in the palette :).

I’ve also packed a few of my favorite DEX eyeshadows and blushes and the pigmentation never fails me and they’re great options for my airport/shopping looks. And gotta love the fact that you can fit two eyeshadow brushes in there along with the products, making touch ups on-the-go that much easier.

I’m thinking I need to pick up an Evian spritzer and some other odds and ends, but for the most part I’m feeling pretty well set for my trip. Now to buckle down and choose a few lip shades to take with me. And you know I’ll be packing up the TEMPTU!

ABS Wants: Ed Hardy Color Kits

October 8, 2009

Ed Hardy’s new ‘Love Kills Slowly’
(top) and ‘Geisha’ (bottom) kits ($55 each) are you basic look in a box type of thing, with the fun addition of Ed Hardy’s Eau de Parfum Solid and the Love & Luck Eau de Parfum Solid. It’s conveniently packaged with all the brushes you need and contains lipstick, gloss, shadow and bronzer plus some cute brushes from the looks of things.

My favorite part? The ‘stage-makeup lights’ running along the two outer flaps. Rather useless but pretty cute!

Handy Dandy Bobbi Brown Face Palette Review

February 24, 2009
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Face Palette ($15)

Perfect for taking your makeup favorites on-the-go. This sleek, portable black case allows you to customize your own color kit of Lip Color, Lip Shimmer, Cream Blush Stick, or Foundation Stick. Holds up to six shades. A blank base label allows you to record your makeup shades. (Cosmetics sold separately.)

Palette closed-check out how slim it is!

I first discovered this palette on the Neiman Marcus site a few years back, decided I just had to have it for those makeup emergency days (when you’re out, have something you need to go to and realize you have no makeup on you), and then forgot all about it–nothing new for me!

Fill-in-the-blank labels on the bottom.

But while shopping around the other day I rediscovered this petite little box of potential goodness and of course picked one up for myself that very same day. While it may seem silly to pay $15 for what’s essentially an empty compact, the idea of being able to fill up a slim compact with all of the day’s necessities really appeals to me, so for me it was worth it. Imagine having the day’s foundation, blush, lipstick, and cream eyeshadow, all in one little package that can be discretely slipped into an purse, clutch, or pocket–you could probably even fit this into a decent-sized wallet!

Top Row: Etude House Pore Erasing Peach Base, Max Studio Pan Stick, Smashbox Tokidoki stick
Bottom Row: YSL Rouge Voluptes (scooped out of these samples)

I used the included spatula to scoop in the Etude House primer, then used a piece of dental floss to slice off pieces of the rest of the products to place in the compact. I then pressed down on the products with a napkin to achieve a nice, relatively smooth finish and voila, face in a compact! Now if I can just remember to carry this around with me, I know that I’ll get tons of use out of it.
